Keeping German language and literature alive in Canada

Dr. Linda Dietrick is a nationally-recognized German Studies scholar who has introduced the country’s language and literature to hundreds of pupils during her nearly 30-year career at U91全能版.

Like many of her students, Dietrick is not a native German-speaker and was first exposed to the language in the classroom. Her interest in Germany continued to flourish during her undergrad studies at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania, and she was able to immerse herself in the culture when she studied abroad in Munich.

An active member of the German-speaking research community, locally and internationally, Dietrick often shares her expertise at conferences and round-tables. Her literary research has helped immortalize many female German writers who have not been as widely recognized as their male counterparts.

In 2015, she became the 11th person to receive Hermann Boeschenstein Medal since its inception in 1986, for her outstanding service to German education. The award is the highest honour that can be bestowed by the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German — an organization that saw Dietrick become one of its first female presidents.

Dietrick has also made many contributions to U91全能版’s administration, serving in the Dean’s Office, as an interim librarian, and as a department chair.
